About Thanet Creative

About Thanet Creative
Thanet Creative started as a writing group hosting in a living room. The idea was first proposed in 2010 and the first meeting was 2013. We have experimented with different formats, meeting locations, and creative collaboration. As a result, we have developed a lot of good resources that can be used by our members to assist writers in developing their craft. We transitioned from a loose collaboration of creatives into a charitable organisation to expand our ability to support creativity.

Mission
Thanet Creative exists to support and encourage self-expression through creativity, especially creative writing. We believe that creative expression is an important part of the human experience. The ability to express our innermost thoughts are vital for self-care, improving mental health, and promoting a general sense of well being. For this reason, we will work as hard as we can to enable people of all backgrounds equal access to the self-expression of creativity.

About our charity

Thanet Creative: A Creative Charity

Thanet Creative is a charity that exists to support projects that promote creativity in and around Thanet. How much support we can offer depends on the generosity of our members, the time members volunteer, and any grants or funding we receive.

Thanet Creative is a community-driven enterprise run by our members; for both members and non-members alike.

All of our members have:

  • The right to attend and vote at AGMs and/or to stand for election as a trustee.
  • The right to apply for your event accreddited as an official Thanet Creative project.
  • The right to sponsor the membership of your friends and supporters.
  • An open invitation to all official Thanet Creative events.
  • Priority registration for events with limited places.

Thanet Creative: Trustees

Our chair is currently Matthew Brown. Matthew, a founding member, has held this post by unanimous vote since we became a charity.

Our treasurer is David Clements - another founding member. David has been keeping our finances in good order since we formed.

At the 2018 AGM, some of our trustees needed to stand down due to a mix of family and work commitments. They were replaced by Kieron Allin, Karen Allin, and Andrew Winder.

Fun Fact
As an inside joke, our trustees sometimes pick amusing or witty "officer" titles for themselves. While unofficial, our trustees seem to enjoy being addressed by various creative titles.

Charity Structure

Thanet Creative is overseen by a board of trustees. Although all trustees on the board have an equal vote, some carry additional responsibilities. These trustees, known as officers, are selected at the AGM or appointed by the other trustees if the role becomes vacant.

Writing Groups in Thanet

Thanet Creative was first started to support writers' groups. While we may have expanded to include all creativity, we still seek to look after our writers. That's why we made a list of all the writers' groups in Thanet. Yes, all of them. Or at least as many as we can find.
